Canada’s Southern Prairie Secrets

Canadian Wonders to be Discovered on the Roads Less Travelled

Canada’s Southern Prairie Secrets

This trip takes you through one of the most easily accessible “quiet” places on the planet where you can travel in relative comfort. This area is rich in First Nations and geological / paleontological history. It is a region where wildlife is plentiful. The “Turn of the 19th Century” story is very colorful with whiskey traders, cattle rustlers, and the North-West Mounted Police playing significant roles. The land is known for its friendly residents, many of whom are in the ranching business. Saskatchewan’s slogan is the “Land of the Living Skies” for good reason. The route is also anchored by two Dark Sky Preserves and stargazing on clear nights is amazing.

Highlight activities to choose from include cycling in the Cypress Hills between Horseshoe Canyon and Head of the Mountain viewpoints, kayaking along the Frenchman River in Grasslands National Park, and horseback riding in the rangelands. Other exciting activities comprise stand-up paddleboarding on Elkwater Lake, viewing bison and prairie dogs in their natural habitat in the Grasslands, and exploring ghost towns. Enjoy a step back in time at the T.rex Discovery Center and the Claybank Brick Plant National Historic Site, take in the scenery and history of the Big Muddy Badlands, and at night view the Milky Way and its billions of stars.
